Ages 0-5 — Treatment is dyadic, meaning sessions include the primary caregiver(s). For young children who have experienced trauma, the parent-child attachment relationship is affected and requires repair. This work is guided by an evidenced-based model called Child-Parent Psychotherapy.
Ages 6-11 — Sessions become more flexible in format, with some including parents and others occurring individually. In addition to verbal communication, play and art therapy techniques will be used to elicit information about experiences and feelings. Virtual treatment may be considered starting at age 10.
Ages 12-17 — Therapy can be conducted individually via telehealth, with a greater focus on direct discussion of events and emotions.
The ultimate goal of treatment is to support developmental progress by helping children and adolescents function well in the emotional, social, and cognitive domains - in other words, to attain or restore affective self-regulation, safe reciprocal interpersonal relationships, and readiness to explore and learn without recklessness or crippling fear.
